Five reasons Arjen Robben would be a great signing for Manchester United

Despite Louis van Gaal's embarrassment of attacking riches at Manchester United, Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben would be a fantastic addition.

According to reports, Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich are fighting to keep Arjen Robben out of Manchester United’s reach by offering him yet another contract.

Robben is a player Louis van Gaal would love to bring to Old Trafford, having previously worked with him at both club and international level, and the Daily Star suggests the Dutch international's relationship with the Red Devils boss could see him return to the Premier League

The Bayern winger famously turned down United 11 years ago to join Chelsea but the Manchester outfit's interest has never gone away. There has been talk of a £24 million offer from United for his services - this could materialise as van Gaal looks to reinforce his side over the winter window.

Despite approaching the twilight years of his career, the Dutchman would still be a fantastic addition to van Gaal's Manchester United side.

Here are the statistics to prove it:

1 - With 10 goals in 13 appearances this term, Robben is Bayern Munich's current top scorer. He has three goals more than his closest challengers Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze, who have both played 16 matches, and he has managed more than Manchester United's summer signings combined (8).

  Goals ScoredAppearances
Ángel Di María 3 12
Falcao 3 12
Ander Herrera 2 10
Daley Blind 1 8

2 - The Dutchman is also the Bavarians' most innovative player for the current campaign, having fashioned 38 scoring opportunities in total. Based on his rate of 2.9 key passes per game, only two players have fashioned more goal scoring chances than Robben across the Premier League and Bundesliga - Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas and Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne.

Ángel Di María 2.58 12
Juan Mata 1.53 17
Wayne Rooney 1.31 16
Ander Herrera 1.3 10

3 - With Arjen Robben averaging 4.1 successful dribbles per match, Eden Hazard (4.6) is the only Premier League player to boast a superior success rate when it comes to taking on an opponent. This is testament to the Bayern winger's ability to cause havoc for opposition defenders, as, despite being 30 years of age, he continues to penetrate the final third with tremendous pace and purpose.

  TeamSuccessful Take Ons/ AppDispossessed/ AppAppearances
Eden Hazard Chelsea 4.6 2.55 20
Victor Moses Stoke 3.7 2.2 10
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Arsenal 3.42 1.11 19
Ross Barkley Everton 3.38 1.92 13
Alexis Sánchez Arsenal 3.26 3 19
Raheem Sterling Liverpool 3.2 1.9 20
Jefferson Montero Swansea 3.06 0.82 17
Philippe Coutinho Liverpool 2.88 1.29 17
Mesut Özil Arsenal 2.83 1.17 6
Yannick Bolasie C. Palace 2.65 1.6 20

4 - Despite Robben's tendency to challenge defenders with the ball at his feet, he finds himself dispossessed far less often than each of the Premier League's most prolific wingers (1.1). Of those who compile the English top flight's top ten dribblers, only Swansea's Jefferson Montero finds himself tackled on fewer occasions per appearance.

5 - Sergio Aguero (4.9) is the only player to average more shots per game than Robben (4.5), across both divisions. Despite the attacking talent at van Gaal's disposal, the Red Devils are still receiving criticism for being too pedestrian in the final third. Robben's selfishness means he is often not afraid to take a game by the scruff of the neck; a trait only Angel Di Maria really provides at Old Trafford right now.
