Manchester United should look into the signature of Stephan Lichtsteiner

Should the Swiss international be available, Manchester United should snap him up.

Manchester United have been in good form recently, much of that has been down to the performances of Ashley Young.

The England international has been a revelation at wing-back, providing Louis van Gaal a real option during an injury crisis.

But unfortunately for him, his progress has now been waylaid. He has picked up a hamstring injury during the New Years Day fixture with Stoke City, which looks set to keep him out of action for a number of weeks, if not months.

With Louis van Gaal getting real success from a wing-back system his absence will certainly harm the team. They now have only Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Rafael capable of playing the role, so should they make a move for a player considered one of the best wing-backs in world football.

Stephan Lichtsteiner is out of contract at the end of the season, although it is heavily reported that both parties are keen on extending that current deal.

But while the process continues to rumble on his future will be up for debate.

Manchester United would do well to capitalise. A permanent deal in January seems unlikely. But a loan deal with a decent fee to keep him at the club until the end of the season certainly seems like a great option.

Plenty of teams are chasing Xherdan Shaqiri, Lichtsteiner's countryman, with United mentioned as one such team.

But this is the Swiss international they need to acquire.
