Arsenal teenager Hector Bellerin thanks Chelsea legend for his improvement

Arsenal's Hector Bellerin says his loan at Watford was the making of him.

Arsenal breakthrough star Hector Bellerin says his spell out on loan was key in his development.

The Spaniard began 2014 out on loan at Championship side Watford, and was recalled in mid-February.

Ever since then he has been close to the first team picture, and made his debut this season at right-back, even providing an assist in the recent win over Newcastle.

The teenager believes his spell at the Hornets was important for him, and thanked former Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola who gave him the belief to succeed.

He told “It wasn’t a really long period [at Watford], but it was really intense and we had a lot of games.

"“I learnt a lot in those two months. I started playing with really good players there as well. I had Gianfranco Zola as a coach, which helped me a lot.

"To get the trust from people like him was really important from him. It was a really positive loan for me."

Zola has since left Watford and is now managing at Cagliari, while Bellerin takes his Arsenal career forward.

He is not the only Arsenal youngster to talk highly of a recent spell out on loan in the Championship, with Francis Coquelin recently returning to the first team after getting first team action at Charlton, while another Spaniard, Jon Toral, is getting chances at Brentford.

With Benik Afobe scoring for fun for League One side MK Dons, expect to see more Arsenal prospects heading on loan in 2015 to improve their development.
