Ex-Chelsea striker Demba Ba omitted from Senegal AFCON squad

The Besiktas attacker has been in good form but coach Alain Giresse has opted for other options ahead of the competition in Equatorial Guinea.

Former Chelsea and Newcastle striker Demba Ba has somewhat surprisingly been left out of Senegal’s squad for the African Cup of Nations.

The Besiktas forward has been in strong form of late, netting eight Super Lig goals this term, but has been overlooked by national coach Alain Giresse.

Ba’s absence means that the goalscoring burden will have to be taken up by Premier League forwards Diafro Sakho, Papiss Cisse and Mame Biram Diouf.

Senegal are set to take on Ghana, Algeria and South Africa in Group C of the tournament in Equatorial Guinea next month.

Senegal’s preliminary AFCON squad:
