United morning news: Star's transfer ‘was very close’ and Januzaj latest

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has admitted he was close to joining Manchester United prior to his switch to the Bernabeu.

The French centre-back has again been linked with United in recent weeks, but in an interview with Elminuto7.com, the player said, “It’s true, we were very close to a deal with Manchester United.

“We had an appointment with Alex Ferguson. I went with my mother who was a translator. The project was interesting but I decided on Real Madrid.”

Varane has gone on to make 88 appearances for the Spanish side but he has been tipped to move on, so could United still be interested?

In other news, the Daily Star reports that Inter Milan are the latest club to be interested in United player Adnan Januzaj.

The Belgian international had an outstanding debut season at Old Trafford but this year has not gone according to plan and the teenager has been linked with a loan spell at Real Socieded.

However, the latest report claims Inter also want the player as Louis van Gaal attempts to give him more first-team action.
