Southampton player ratings vs Arsenal: Forster excellent as defender struggles

We rate Southampton's players's performances in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last night.

Fraser Forster - 8

A strong display from the goalkeeper, who pulled off a number of fine saves for Southampton. He could do nothing with Alexis Sanchez's strike in the last minute.

Nathaniel Clyne - 7

Another good performance from Clyne, whose reputation seems to be increasing by the day. He was solid in defence and always an outlet going forward.

Jose Fonte - 5

The centre-back had been having a decent game until an error in the last minute cost his side the match. Fonte sliced his clearance and then chased after it, compounding his initial error, and allowing Sanchez to run into the space he left to score.

Toby Alderweireld - 7

Southampton will be determined to sign him on a permanent basis from Atletico Madrid. Whether operating at centre-back or in defensive midfield he was exceptional. The Belgian's injury, which forced the Saints down to 10 men, in the latter stages was a frustration, though.

Ryan Bertrand - 6

A steady if unspectacular performance from the left-back.

Steven Davis - 7

One of the most underrated players in the Premier League, Davis showed his value to the Southampton side once again last night. A tireless worker, he linked the play up expertly and showed his quality defensively at the same time.

Victor Wanyama - 6

The powerful midfielder wasn't as involved as he can be, but it was still a solid display from the Kenyan.

Jack Cork - 5

Struggling with injury and had to be replaced early on.

Dusan Tadic - 7

A pleasure to watch. The Serbian is one of the most entertaining players in the Premier League and is always positive in possession.

Shane Long - 5

Nothing really worked for Long. Wasted a big opportunity in the second-half, when he blazed over with others well placed.

Graziano Pelle - 5

After a blistering start to his Southampton career, the Italian has struggled to make an impact in recent games. Snatched at a big chance early on and didn't really pose much of a goal-threat all night.

Maya Yoshida - 6

The centre-back did a decent enough job after being brought on mid-way through the first-half.

Sadio Mane - 6

His pace is always a threat, but he wasn't able to have too much of an impact.

Emmanuel Mayuka - N/A

Brought on too late in the game to do anything of note.
