United morning news: Five linked on superstar wish-list; van Gaal on Christmas

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

With the January transfer window just one month away Manchester United have been linked with a number of new players.

The Mirror has picked up on claims from French publication Le10 Sport that United manager Louis van Gaal is interested in five players – all of whom have been linked with an Old Trafford switch in the past.

The list includes Kevin Strootman, Wesley Sneijder, Mats Hummels, Miranda and Raphael Varane and it would be no surprise if United did bring in at least one quality centre-back sooner rather than later.

But wanting them and signing them are two very different things and even if United are interested in adding real quality in defence and in midfield, bringing such stars in midway through the season will be a considerable challenge.

In other news, van Gaal has bemoaned United’s festive fixture schedule.

The Guardian reports on comments from the Dutch manager, in which he said of the Christmas matches, “I also have a wife and kids and grandchildren and I cannot see them this Christmas.

“But I want to work in the Premier League. I have to adapt and I shall adapt.”
