The official reason for Benjamin Stambouli's absence for Tottenham is unclear.
Tottenham produced one of their best displays of the season against Everton, but was it despite a peculiar selection decision?
The star man in Thursday night's Europa League win, Benjamin Stambouli, was not even on the bench in the Premier League clash, with no official reason offered for his absence.
The Frenchman was outstanding against Partizan, scoring the only goal, and dominating the midfield, even creating more chances than any other player.
Pochettino has so far however been reluctant to use the £6 million man in the Premier League, with no starts for him to date.
The club are well stocked in midfield, and he preferred a player who only came off the bench against Partizan, Nabil Bentaleb.
The Algerian youngster did not let the side down, and the manner of the 2-1 win over Everton cannot be argued with either.
Yet leaving Stambouli out altogether seemed a little questionable, although is in keeping with Pochettino's squad rotation this season early on.
A full rest for the Frenchman should see him come back into the head coach's thinking against Chelsea, and his tenacity may be exactly what Tottenham need if they are to get a result in midweek at Stamford Bridge.
