Former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela struck a hat-trick yesterday as David Moyes claimed his first victory as Real Sociedad manager, defeating struggling Elche 3-0 in front of a delighted Anoeta crowd.
The Scottish boss had been out of action since losing his job with the Red Devils towards the end of last season and surprised many with his decision to choose Sociedad as his next destination.
Still held in high esteem in the footballing world, the former United and Everton manager could have waited out for another Premier League opportunity.
However, rather admirably Moyes decided to test the waters abroad by taking over an underachieving Sociedad side still feeling the effects of last season’s Champions League disappointment.
Moyes’s first La Liga match ended in a non-eventful 0-0 draw at Deportivo La Coruna, but yesterday’s victory over Elche was full of endeavour and promise.
Vela, once a former a reserve player with the Gunners, set the tone with a header after just two minutes and went onto add another two clinical finishes to complete a hat-trick before the hour mark.
The Mexican international has come on leaps and bounds since his younger days in North London and is now one of the hottest and most effective strikers in Spain.
Moyes will be keen to work closely with the former West Bromwich Albion loan star and build a squad around the striker in order to once again challenge for the Champions League spots.
Next up for Sociedad and Moyes is a Copa del Rey clash before two tough La Liga fixtures against Villarreal and Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao.
