Forget Fabregas and Ozil, Spanish football fans vote United ace in World XI

Manchester United’s Angel di Maria, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas are nominated for the FIFPro World XI.

Spanish fans participating in an online poll conducted by Marca have voted in favour of Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria to be included in the FIFPro World XI.

The FIFPro World XI is the best team selected by the players for the year 2014 and will be announced at the Ballon d’Or gala.

Five players from each position have been selected, with FIFA going for a traditional 4-3-3 formation meaning the competition for midfield spots is particularly intriguing.

From the Premier League, Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, City’s Yaya Toure and Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria are the five names that have made the list.

Spanish football fans evidently haven’t forgotten the huge impact Di Maria had on Real Madrid last season before moving to the Red Devils in a British record £59.7 million transfer.

The Argentine wizard beat the Blues’ summer signing Fabregas in the race to win the La Liga assist charts last year, totalling a whopping 17 for the season – 10 more than Stamford Bridge idol Hazard.

In a new midfield role given to him in place of Ozil who swapped Madrid for the Gunners in the summer of 2013, Di Maria helped Los Blancos complete a stunning Copa Del Rey and Champions League double.

As a result, he is looked upon admirably by not only the Madrid fans but supporters throughout Spain as 14.2% feel he deserves a place in the FIFPro World XI – coming in third spot behind Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Hazard and Yaya Toure both claimed 3.2% of the votes each, ahead of Fabregas with 1.6% and the Gunners’ under-fire German international Ozil with just 1.3% of the votes.
