English sides were in action in the Champions League tonight, as Liverpool fielded a weakened side in their 1-0 defeat at Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Arsenal spectacularly threw away a 3-0 lead against Belgian side Anderlecht, ending up with just a point in the end.
Neither Brendan Rodgers nor Arsene Wenger will be particularly happy with their side's results tonight, but Rodgers may have found something to smile about.
The Liverpool boss has been linked with a move for Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, with his agent even confirming that the Reds submitted a £10m bid in the summer.
"Benfica and Liverpool were willing to pay €13m for him and Russian outfit Rubin even offered €20m, but Anderlecht didn’t want to hear about a transfer," said Nenad Jestrovic.
"His father and I told him that he is still young and he will have a lot of opportunities to leave Anderlecht in the future. I’m sure that price will be even higher when he moves somewhere else."
A classic targetman, Mitrovic is just 20 but has already generated quite the reputation having smashed 25 goals in 58 games for the Belgian outfit.
A former team mate of Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic from their time together at Partizan Belgrade, Mitrovic has had some doubters recently, but he proved them wrong with a dramatic late equaliser for Anderlecht at the Emirates Stadium, finishing off Andy Najar's teasing crosses with a bullet diving header to send the travelling Anderlecht fans into delirium behind the goal.
With more performances like that, Liverpool may yet return with a January bid for the Serbian international, particularly with Fabio Borini, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert struggling for goals.
