An image on the way into Arsenal’s Emirates stadium may have given away who Arsene Wenger is planning to make his next captain.
Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker currently share captaincy duties at the club but with neither getting any younger, Wenger will soon have to think about who he’ll give the role to long term.
The image shows Arsenal’s current stars lined up with Wenger at the front of the team, with Jack Wilshere pictured where the skipper normally stands at the top of the team.
So would he make a good captain? Certainly, if he can avoid getting caught smoking again.
Wilshere is relatively assured of his place in the team when he’s fit and he’s the sort of feisty player in the middle of the team who likes to lead by example.
He showed in the recent match against Chelsea that he’s not afraid to get stuck in and stand up for his teammates, unleashing a verbal attack on Chelsea captain John Terry.
Perhaps Wilshere was meant to be pictured somewhere else in the line-up but if Wenger makes Wilshere the next captain, it’s not a bad selection.
