Savage: The best City and United can hope for this season

Robbie Savage has suggested Manchester City and Manchester United are already fighting for second place this season.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage has suggested that the FA Cup is the only trophy that either Manchester club can win this season.

In his column for the Daily Mirror, Savage has suggested that the Manchester derby this weekend has lost meaning due to the inconsistent form of Manchester City and Manchester United this season.

“I believe the FA Cup is the only trophy either club can win this season,” wrote Savage.

“So a fixture which was effectively a title decider two seasons ago is now just a local argument for bragging rights in Manchester.”

City head into the match as favourites for two reasons; they have home advantage and the league suggests they have been the better team so far this season.

They will be extremely determined to ensure that their defence is watertight after back-to-back defeats against West Ham last weekend and Newcastle United in the League Cup earlier this week.

For United, they go into the game well rested after their best performance of the season so far against Chelsea.

They may have been scrambling for an equaliser before Robin Van Persie’s late strike, but they deserved something from that game against the Premier League leaders.

City definitely have the better chance of winning, and retaining, the Premier League title this season.

Although there is still a very long way to go in the season, United are too far behind the Blues and already out of the League Cup, which means the FA Cup really is their best chance of a trophy.

The derby this weekend will still pack a lot of punch but it’s not going to be as important a game as seen in previous years.
