Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has tweeted his support to Spain teammate Thiago Alcantara, following news that the Bayern Munich midfielder is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Thiago, 23, moved from Barcelona to the German giants last summer for around €25 million, but saw his first season at the Allianz Arena ended in late March when he tore a knee ligament against Hoffenheim in a Bundesliga clash.
The five-times capped international returned to training just four weeks later but suffered a serious setback, which forced him to go under the knife and miss the World Cup finals in Brazil as a result.
He was in the midst of working back to full fitness, having started practicing again with the first-team last week, but will now require another operation after reinjuring the ligaments in his right knee.
De Gea featured alongside Thiago in the Spain Under-21 sides which won consecutive European Championships in 2011 and 2013, with the pair being named to the Team of the Tournament on both occasions.
The former Barca prospect and team captain was also voted MVP of the latter championship, after netting a hat-trick in the 4-2 final over the Italians, making him one of the most sought after commodities entering the 2013 summer transfer market.
Linked with an €18 million move to United at the time, De Gea signed his compatriot’s hat-trick ball with the message ‘Nos vemos en Manchester’ - ‘See you in Manchester’.
