AC Milan struggling to extend Liverpool linked wide man's contract

Right-back Ignazio Abate is reportedly a target for Liverpool and AC Milan haven't made much progress in contract renewal talks.

Italian international Ignazio Abate is one of the fastest players in Serie A and he is said to have caught the eye of Liverpool, forcing AC Milan to step up their bid to agree a new contract.

The 27-year-old can play either at right back or on the right wing and is full of attacking intent as well as being solid in defence.

Abate has become an important figure for Milan, but as the team underachieved badly last season his long-term future is in doubt.

Liverpool have already knocked on Milan's door for Mario Balotelli and the next time it may be for Abate, who must be frustrated at playing for a side who didn't even qualify for Europe at all last season.

It looks like another uphill battle for Milan to book a place in the Champions League with Juventus and Roma out in front and Inter, Napoli and Fiorentina ready to fight.

And Sky Italia suggests that Abate hasn't been too willing to dedicate his future to Milan. The player's agent Mino Raiola, who also represents Balotelli, has been in talks with the Rossoneri over a new deal but only small steps have been made.

Raiola is known for his uncompromising approach to furthering the careers of his clients and he may feel that Abate would be best served by a move to the Premier League.
