Baggio still haunted by 1994 penalty miss

Italian striking legend Roberto Baggio has admitted that he has been unable to forget his costly penalty miss in the 1994 World Cup final.

Roberto Baggio was the hero of the 1994 World Cup for Italy until he ballooned his kick in the final penalty shootout against Brazil and the moment still weighs on his mind.

The former AC Milan, Inter and Juventus marksman had dragged a somewhat underwhelming Italian side through the competition in 1994, almost singlehandedly vanquishing Nigeria and Bulgaria, as well as scoring against Spain.

But Baggio's competition will always be remembered for his penalty kick after the final against Brazil had ended 0-0.

Franco Baresi and Daniele Massaro had already missed when Baggio came to the spot at 3-2 down needing to score to keep Italy in it. Instead he blazed over the bar in an uncharacteristic loss of cool.

"I take that penalty with me always," Baggio said on TV show Tiki Taka.

"There's nothing I can do about it.

"I always dreamed of playing in a World Cup final since I was a little boy, but I never thought it could end like that.

"I still find it hard to accept what happened that day. However, it has helped me to stay humble because life is a continued challenge and you can't beat yourself up."

While Baggio's scoring exploits would be enough to catch the eye, he has also won plaudits for his vision, pace and invention in taking on defenders.

Juventus would most likely see Baggio as an investment for the future rather than an immediate starter and may send him out on loan to another Serie A or Serie B side to gain experience.

However, with rumours that Fernando Llorente may leave the club as well as Fabio Quagliarella and Mirko Vucinic, Baggio could be given an opportunity to impress fairly soon.

Do you think Baggio can make the grade in Serie A?
