Louis van Gaal comments on Patrick McNair’s debut for Manchester United v West Ham United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits that Patrick McNair would not have played against West Ham United had his regular defenders been fit.

Patrick McNair made his debut for Manchester United against West Ham United at Old Trafford this afternoon.

The 19-year-old defender was rushed into the first team following the injury crisis that the Red Devils are having.

The Northern Irish youngster is currently part of United’s Under-21 team, but he was rushed into the first team for today’s Premier League game against the Hammers.

Injuries to Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, and suspension for Tyler Blackett meant that McNair, who started his career as a midfielder, was thrown in against West Ham.

Had Van Gaal not faced such problems in central defence, then the youngster would not have featured in today’s game, and that’s exactly what the Dutchman seemed to suggest.

‘We have three central defenders injured so that’s also a coincidence I believe’, the 63-year-old told Sky Sports before the match. ‘Now we have to look to use that occasion and we have found Patrick McNair’.

It may have been a ‘coincidence’ that McNair featured against West Ham, but coincidences like these are what change people’s lives. And perhaps it will change McNair’s.
