German press react to Mats Hummels to Manchester United transfer news

Mats Hummels 2 Germany

Sport-BILD doubt the legitimacy of the speculation that Borussia Dortmund are set to sell Mats Hummels to Manchester United.

One of Manchester United's priority targets in the summer transfer window, Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund, remains of interest according to The Guardian who yesterday reported that "Louis van Gaal has ordered club bean-counters to hose the Westfalenstadion with cash until their German counterparts have no option but to relent and sell."

While Manchester United adopted an aggressive transfer market strategy throughout the open market earlier this summer, with a recruitment drive that saw Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao all join the club, the Old Trafford side are still regarded to be light in the heart of defence - and the acquisition of Hummels could well be the missing link.

Sport-BILD, though, have attempted to play down this rumour.

"The report in the Guardian stated that the interest in Hummels still exists," the German publication stated.

"Hummels though is still tied to 2017 at Dortmund and has no exit clause [and] manager Jurgen Klopp had recently stressed repeatedly that they would not sell Hummels, [who was recently appointed] captain of the Black-Yellow."

Tall, ball-playing centre back Hummels, 25, has a valuation of £30.8 million.

The player was a mainstay during Germany's successful 2014 World Cup campaign and completed 11 interceptions, 16 tackles and 29 clearances whilst also proving accurate with 81% of his 1,417 passes, assisting twice and scoring twice - all from six appearances.
