Destiny pulls in $500 million in first day sales

Slated as possibly the biggest game of the year, Destiny certainly lives up to its title after just one day.

In a press release it was revealed that the new FPS MMO from Bungie and Activision has become 'the most successful new video game franchise launch of all time'. Destiny was released worldwide on Tuesday, yet Activision Publishing, the game's publishers, have revealed the company sold over $500 million of Destiny to 'retail stores and first parties worldwide as of day one'.

CEO of Activision Blizzard (the parent company of Activision Publishing Inc.), Bobby Kotick, said, 'based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny. This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.'

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing also commented on the success, saying, 'since the beginning, we’ve been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we’d be able to say it did so on day one.' He continued by stating, 'Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry’s history. It’s also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation and Activision’s next billion dollar brand. Most importantly, it’s just a great game which we can’t stop playing. A big thanks to our incredibly talented team and partners who helped make this happen; most importantly, our partners at Bungie.'

So, now the game is out and it's already been a 'success' in terms of sales, it's time to wait for those all-important reviews. I got my hands on the game yesterday, and I'm currently working my way through the content I played during the beta in July. Keep an eye out for our review of the full game in the coming weeks.

Destiny is available now on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
