'He will flourish and explode' - Rio Ferdinand comments on Danny Welbeck's move to Arsenal

Rio Ferdinand has backed his former Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck to be a success at Arsenal.

Rio Ferdinand has backed Danny Welbeck to be a major success at Arsenal.

The striker completed a £16 million switch to the Gunners from Manchester United at the last minute of deadline day and Ferdinand believes that it could be a good move for all involved.

He took to social media site Twitter to say:Welbeck is a top signing for arsenal. Good business done by them. If he gets that trust to be no.1 striker at AFC he will flourish & explode.”

Welbeck comes in at Arsenal as the man intended to lead the line and he will be expected to step-up after being tasked with scoring goals.

At United he was regularly deployed as a winger, as they looked to use his counter-attacking qualities, but he will be the player to spearhead the attack at the Emirates.

Welbeck has never been renowned as a predator, but it will be imperative he shows this qualities in his new surroundings.

The 23-year-old comes in to add quality to a forward line desperately lacking a goalscorer.

With Olivier Giroud out injured for the foreseeable future, Alexis Sanchez and Yaya Sanogo both appeared to be fighting it out for the striking position at the North-London club, but neither are entirely comfortable there.

Sanogo simply doesn’t look good enough for a title challenging side, whilst Sanchez is better utilised in wide areas.

It means that Welbeck is likely to come straight into the Gunners' starting team upon his arrival and Arsenal fans will be encouraged by his former teammate's words.

Ferdinand saw Welbeck rise up through the youth-system at Old Trafford into starting contention and he knows the qualities of the England international better than most.

As such, his words are a boost for any Arsenal fans concerned about their latest addition – who has been regularly, and largely unfairly, been criticised throughout his career – and if he is correct Welbeck could be the signing to push them onto the next level.
