News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been named England captain by Roy Hodgson on Thursday.

The 28-year-old described the honour as a “dream come true” whilst the national team coach explained his decision to give the responsibility to the United No.10 following the retirement of Steven Gerrard.

“Wayne is an obvious choice for his honesty, commitment to the cause, his experience, the fact he has already captained England in the past.”

“Now of course he’s got that responsibility at Manchester United as well. All those factors weighed into my thought process and I’m pleased to be able to say I’ve been able to offer it to him. I had a long conversation with him and he’s prepared to accept the pressures the England captaincy brings,” said Hodgson.

Rooney told the official website:

“To be named as the England captain is a dream come true for me personally and of course for my family. It is something I will take massive pride in doing.”

Club record signing Angel Di Maria was unveiled today in a meeting with the press joined by manager Louis van Gaal.

The Argentine attacker who signed this week for £59.7 million told reporters:

“I come here to work for the team and I am prepared to play in any position the manager wants me to play in.”

“United is a great club and has already won many trophies. It was my boyhood dream to play for United. I come here to help raise their game help them to be great again and to win many trophies with them,” he added.

However, the boss urged patience with the new addition and suggested fans should not expect ‘miracles’ instantly.

Louis van Gaal also implied there will be plenty more activity in the transfer market, stating:

“The club will [announce] when the time’s there. Players will leave, others will come.”

Angel Di Maria also revealed that United favourite Cristiano Ronaldo told him to wear the iconic No.7 shirt.

“Cristiano told me what the No 7 shirt meant. I wanted to wear this shirt. The club wanted me to wear it,” Di Maria said.

Angel Di Maria’s arrival at Old Trafford makes this Manchester United squad the most expensive ever assembled in Premier League history, costing more than £400 million.

In transfer news, Aston Villa are to make an £8 million offer for Tom Cleverley according to The Telegraph.

Meanwhile, United are linked with a £24 million offer for William Carvalho of Sporting Lisbon, with Arsenal also in the race to sign the Portuguese midfielder.

However, Ajax’s Marc Overmars has warned United Daley Blind will only be sold for an “absolutely top price” as United continue their pursuit of the Netherlands international.

Elsewhere, United are understood to have received offers for Javier Hernandez from Valencia and Juventus with the Mexican striker expected to be sold for between £12 million and £15 million.

Finally, it is expected that Wilfried Zaha will re-join former club Crystal Palace on loan this season.
