North-East latest: Newcastle want Spurs ace; Diakite has 10 clubs after him; Chelsea forward to complete 'Boro move

We bring you the latest news from Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

Michael Dawson of interest to Newcastle

Newcastle United are set to make a late bid to try and land Tottenham Hotspur star Michael Dawson, according to reports.

The England international is on the verge of a move to Hull City, but it appears that the Magpies could swoop in to steal him off them.

The experienced centre-back has no future at White Hart Lane after slipping down the pecking order and has been made available for transfer this summer.

Alan Pardew defends cup statements

Alan Pardew has defended Newcastle United’s policy of not being bothered by cup competition.

Many supporters are desperate to see the club land some silverware, but Pardew believes that the Premier League is their only priority and says that the club is only telling the truth by admitting it.

“Perhaps at board level we say what other boards don’t say – that is the Premier League is the be all and end all because of the television money,” he said to the Journal.

“You can’t hide from that and we have not hidden from it – we have actually said it, perhaps to our detriment.

Modibe Diakite has 10 to choose from

Sunderland midfielder Modibe Diakite has 10 clubs to choose from, as he nears an exit from the Stadium of Light.

The powerful player has been put up for sale this summer by Gus Poyet, as he sees no way for him to break into the first-team, but finding a new club doesn’t appear to have been a problem.

"Diakite has got 10 options," Poyet is quoted as saying in the Shields Gazette. "The problem is managing them because he has got his priorities as well."

Will Buckley looking to build on debut

Sunderland newboy Will Buckley is looking to build on an impressive debut for the club.

Buckley posed a huge threat to Manchester United’s defence at the weekend, as the Black Cats drew 1-1 and the pacey wideman wants to continue to impress.

He said to the Sunderland Echo: “I loved every minute (of his debut). You get a bit nervous before every game, whatever level you play at.

“But I like to think I took it in my stride and there’s plenty more to come.”

Patrick Bamford to complete Middlesbrough switch

Patrick Bamford’s transfer to Middlesbrough should go through today.

The Chelsea youngster has been on the verge of a move to the Riverside for some time now, but has taken his time to make up his mind.

However, he has finally made a decision and he will take his medical at ‘Boro today – with his loan move set to be officially confirmed later.
