Manchester United striker claims Chelsea defender the 'toughest' he faced

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed the ‘toughest’ defender he has faced in his career for club and country.

Wayne Rooney has faced some of the world’s finest defensive talents in his career with Manchester United and England. The Englishman has played against the likes of Carles Puyol, Giorgio Chiellini, Vincent Kompany, Thiago Silva, Lucio, and Fabio Cannavaro and yet his most feared opponent resides in the Premier League.

The Red Devils’ No.10 answered questions in a Nike Football video and stated that Chelsea defender John Terry was the ‘toughest’ he’d faced yet, his former England colleague.

“I would have to say John Terry is the toughest defender I've played against. He reads the game really well, he's physical and he's tough to play against so you know you're always in for a tough game when you play against him,” said Rooney.

The pair could face each other once again this season as the Blues take on the Red Devils but the Chelsea captain and the United playmaker may not come into quite such fierce contact as in previous seasons with Rooney operating in a deeper role.

Rooney acts as provider these days behind Robin van Persie, while Jose Mourinho uses John Terry more sparingly in the Chelsea backline.

Rooney played alongside some great defenders in his time at Old Trafford – Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and Gary Neville and he’ll have the opportunity to test himself alongside new boy Marcos Rojo who has just arrived from Sporting Lisbon but the Argentine centre back will have some way to go before he reaches the level of consistency kept up over the years by Chelsea legend and skipper John Terry.
