United defender tipped to stay following van Gaal's uncertainty over defence

One of Manchester United’s young stars looks to be staying at Old Trafford this season following uncertainties over the defence.

Manchester United defender Michael Keane looks set to stay at Old Trafford amid reports he was on the verge of joining Cardiff City, according to WalesOnline.

United’s defensive frailty in their 2-1 defeat to Swansea City at the weekend looks to have forced Louis van Gaal into keeping the youngster, who reportedly impressed the Dutch coach during pre-season.

Keane had been set to drop into the Championship to aid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defensive cause at Cardiff, but any potential loan move now appears unlikely.

Despite the seemingly imminent arrival of Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon, Keane could still have a part to play this season, as United look to rebuild following a disastrous season under David Moyes last time out.

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra have all left the club this summer, and fragility at the back again proved costly to the Reds in the opening weekend of the Premier League.

As for Cardiff, their hopes of landing Keane have been dealt a big blow, and the Bluebirds must surely now have to negotiate another option before the end of the transfer window.

Steven Caulker’s departure to Queens Park Rangers this summer means that only Juan Cala, Ben Turner, Mark Hudson and Matthew Connolly, with two of those four carrying injuries. Sean Morrison also arrived from Reading last week, but may have to wait to secure a place in the side.

For Keane though, he has been dealt some good news for his career prospects, as he looks set to stay and be a part of van Gaal’s new era at Old Trafford.
