Hoddle: Manchester United need one addition to be considered title contenders

Glenn Hoddle has revealed that he thinks Manchester United need to bring a central-defender before they will challenge for the title again.

Glenn Hoddle believes that Manchester United need to sign a centre-back this summer before they can be considered genuine title contenders.

The former England manager, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, says that United will improve on their seventh placed finish this time around, but they still need a defender before they can reach the heights that Sir Alex Ferguson guided them to.

In a question and answer session for Sky, he wrote: “They need to strengthen at the back. One more central defender would see them challenge.

Hoddle also expressed his feeling that the 3-4-1-2 formation that Louis van Gaal has utilised during his time at the club so far could be a really positive thing for the club.

“They have been working on a new shape and sometimes that inspires players. For many years they have played with a back four and now they may go with a back three and that gives different responsibilities. That can inspire players and refresh them.”

In terms of defensive additions United have been linked to a host of players, but their search for a centre-back looks set to continue.

Marcos Rojo is expected to complete a switch to Old Trafford in the near future, but their reported attempts to sign Mehdi Benatia and Mats Hummels appear to have faltered.

It leaves United’s central-defensive options looking slim, after Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Matic left the club over the summer.

However, even with their struggles so far in the transfer market in that positon, United are still expected to sign a high-profile centre-back before the window closes.

If they do, the feeling of anticipation around the club – which is already growing by the day – will exponentially increase.

As Hoddle has stated, there is a sense that if United can sign one world-class centre-back then, under the stewardship of Van Gaal, they may have a genuine chance of winning the Premier League title again.

One of the reasons for this is because the side have remained unbeaten in pre-season, where they have faced a clutch of Europe’s top clubs.

However, the Red Devil’s attention has now turned to their first match of the competitive campaign, where they take on Swansea City in the Premier League’s curtain raiser on Saturday.
