Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere: Winning FA Community Shield does not mean this

England international midfielder Jack Wilshere gives his take on Arsenal winning the FA Community Shield at the expense of Manchester City at London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester City headed into the FA Community Shield clash against Arsenal on Sunday as the favourites, but it was the Gunners who emerged triumphant. And how!

The North London club were in control of the contest right from the start and surged ahead midway through the first half through Spain international midfielder Santi Cazorla.

Then just before the half-time interval, Wales star Aaron Ramsey found the target from close range to double Arsenal's advantage, and just past the hour mark French striker Olivier Giroud scored with a world-class effort.

In the end, it proved to be an easy 3-0 win for the 13-time English champions despite the absence of their 2014 World Cup-winning trio of Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski.

Arsenal’s performance and win has led many fans to believe that they can clinch the Premier League this season and end their 10-year wait for the title.

However, Wilshere does not believe that anyone should read too much into his side’s display and told talkSPORT: ‘We beat the champions of England and I know it doesn’t mean we’re going to be champions [this season], but we’ve put down a marker and we’ve shown we’re ready [to challenge]’.

Wise words from Wilshere, and indeed Arsenal can challenge for the championship this season, but it would be wrong to claim right now that they will certainly win it.

The Gunners have one of the strongest midfields in the league and, and if the players remain fit and are in form, then they can certainly go a long way.

However, just like Arsenal, Premier League champions City were also without a number of first-team regulars for Sunday’s match.

Manuel Pellegrini’s squad is still one of the strongest in the division and will commence the 2014-15 campaign as one of the top two favourites to win the title.
