Manchester United transfer news: £45m bid reportedly being prepared for Vidal and more

Manchester United are preparing a £45 million bid for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, according to a report.

The Daily Star claims that the Red Devils have begun negotiations to seal a deal for the Chile international but will sign him only if he passes ‘a stringent medical’, with doubts lingering on the knee injury he suffered before the 2014 World Cup.

The 27-year-old former Bayer Leverkusen star is currently in Australia with the rest of the Juventus squad on a pre-season tour, but it has been reported that he will have to travel to Manchester for the medical.

‘No fee has been agreed yet, but United are increasingly optimistic they will be allowed to put Vidal through a medical before any price is discussed properly’, a source told the British publication.

‘They basically want to check on the knee and make sure he is fit before going through the process of talking money with Juventus.

‘And it seems Juventus are happy to go along with it, even though it's not the usual way of doing things in a transfer’.

United finished as low as seventh in the Premier League last season, but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expects the Red Devils to challenge for the title this campaign.

Under new manager Louis van Gaal, the Manchester outfit have looked impressive in pre-season and have signed midfielder Ander Herrera and defender Luke Shaw.

‘It could be more competitive, yes’, the Frenchman told reporters. ‘Man United will certainly come back into it, so if you have six teams to fight for the championship that would mean that every other game will be of a huge importance’.

Former United midfielder Nicky Butt also expects the three-time European champions to fight for the title.

‘Everyone expects Manchester United to contend for the title’, ESPN quotes him as saying. ‘We finished as low as we have done last season, but when the season starts again, everyone will expect. I am a fan, and I will expect us to be challenging again’.

Meanwhile, United youngster James Wilson has said that he hopes to have impressed manager Van Gaal with his four-goal heroics against Manchester City in the Manchester Senior Cup on Thursday.

‘I do hope so’, the 18-year-old striker told MUTV when asked if he has impressed the Dutchman. ‘I showed him what I can do tonight. Hopefully I can get the call-up to do it for the new gaffer as well’.
