According to VentureBeats, sources close to the matter have confirmed that Google has signed on to buy Twitch – a video game livestreaming website.
This was also rumoured back in May, and supposedly ‘Twitch investors who participated in past rounds are pleased that they will be getting significant returns that are multiple times the amount they originally invested.”
Twitch allows its users to livestream their gameplay over the internet to anyone who wishes to watch. You can stream from PC, and more recently from your PS4 or Xbox One.
In the same way YouTube spawned its own batch of celebrities, Twitch is doing the same, with hundreds of thousands of people following the various channels at any one time, with viewing hours increasing each year.
With the popularity of livestreaming games, and eSports competitions offering up millions of dollars in prize money whilst millions of people watch, it would be a natural step for a big company like Google to come along and invest.
Google and Twitch are yet to comment on the matter, but as soon as anything is confirmed we’ll let you know.
