Liverpool are being linked with a potential move for Manchester City and England midfielder James Milner.
Several reports have suggested Brendan Rodgers could bring the midfielder into his squad ahead of the new season, which has prompted some mixed responses from Liverpool fans.
Milner could be a very clever signing by Rodgers for a number of reasons ahead of an important Premier League and Champions League campaign.
Milner is a versatile player who can play down either side of a team. He works extremely hard and is well known for having a high work rate in a side where several players are perceived as more exciting.
He’s also a very experienced player in Premier League and Champions League terms.
Liverpool played some very attacking football last season, but they could find the Champions League more difficult against well drilled sides who love nothing better than to hurt their opposition on the counter attack.
Milner is disciplined enough to play a strict defensive role, especially when Liverpool play away from home in Europe, looking to secure important points and away goals.
Milner’s current contract with Manchester City expires at the end of the coming season.
That means City will either shortly start talks over a new contract to keep him or they’ll be open to letting him leave if the right sort of offer comes in.
The positives stack up but fans will suggest that the club could perhaps do better in terms of quality and whether Rodgers needs another wide player is doubtful considering the recent deal for Lazar Markovic.
Should Milner leave, he’s likely to want a move to a club that will offer him regular football and as things stand, Markovic and Raheem Sterling should be the stars who start for Rodgers next season.
Here’s what Liverpool fans have made of the rumours on Twitter.
Dont know if Rodgers is out to save all #ENG backup players, we can do better than Milner. But i trust his judgement. #LFC #TransferWindow

I'm sure any #lfc fan will be happy to see Rues or Di maria or Isco in #lfc shirt but seems end up with James Milner over them reality

not entirely convinced #lfc are actually in for #milner it doesn't make much sense, 28 year old plodder? hmm. Most fans would be upset too.

I like nothing about Jame Milner. Rate him very poorly, and should not start for LFC. City fans love the guy, but hes not good.

Milner links are interesting. Always effective when he plays. But whose place does he take in 1st xi? Swap city bench for ours? #LFC #YNWA

Liverpool need some defenders now and shouldn't waste their money on Milner. They could also do with a star signing - Di Maria? Reus? #LFC

I don't believe for one second #LFC are after Milner, would be massively disappointed if we were.
