Spanish website AS has reported that talks between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for Angel Di Maria are ongoing, after the Argentine was linked with a summer move to Manchester United earlier in pre-season.
Di Maria could realistically sign for PSG in a big money deal because of the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in the Real Madrid squad, making it difficult for him to play down either side of the team next season.
AS points to French newspaper L’Equipe, which has revealed the huge offer PSG are likely to make to Di Maria in personal terms, to ensure he joins them ahead of moving to Old Trafford.
“PSG are negotiating with Real Madrid for the transfer of Ángel Di María, although the French side need to sell before they can buy in order to abide by Financial Fair Play,” reports AS.
“Initial negotiations have seen the player offered a contract worth around €8m per season, which would be a significant improvement on his current Madrid deal.”
United showed last season with a new deal for Wayne Rooney that they can be competitive in terms of the wages they offer key players, but this is a sign PSG are extremely determined to ensure they get their man.
What United have working against them is the fact they don’t have Champions League football to offer, but they could afford the fee and could offer Di Maria guaranteed football down the left hand side of the team.
If Di Maria’s motives are financial, which is doubtful, then United also hold an advantage because the tax rate for higher earners in the UK is lower than it is in France.
Despite playing well and being used over the second half of last season by Carlo Ancelotti, Di Maria is thought to be unhappy over the way he was inconsistently used over the first half of the campaign, wanting to avoid a repeat this coming season.
