Here's how Manchester United could line up at the start of the season based on current players and potential signings.
Louis van Gaal will soon be free to focus on his job at Manchester United following the Netherlands’ exit from the World Cup at the hands of Argentina.
The Old Trafford boss has already commissioned deals for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw with more likely to follow once he gets to grips with things at United ahead of next season.
It’s an important campaign for United and here’s how they could line up against Swansea on the opening day.
GK – David De Gea
De Gea is one of the few players to look back at last season and be pleased with the way he performed throughout the campaign.
RB – Phil Jones
Jones has the versatility to play as a right-back and to cover on the right hand side of central defence.
CB – Stefan De Vrij
The Feyenoord defender is someone van Gaal used frequently at the World Cup and a player he could make a serious play for in the transfer market.
CB – Thomas Vermaelen
The other centre-back LvG could go after is Thomas Vermaelen, with United’s interest well known. The boss will now have a chance to stress how much he may want the Arsenal captain.
LB – Luke Shaw
Van Gaal made a big decision allowing the move for Shaw to go through. Expect him to start frequently next season if Patrice Evra heads off to Juventus.
RM – Antonio Valencia
Pace and the ability to work well with the right-back are reasons that LvG could keep Valencia in the team.
DM – Daley Blind
Blind is another Dutchman to have been linked with a move to United and a player van Gaal used in a holding role at the World Cup. His job would be to protect the back four.
CM – Ander Herrera
Herrera’s job when he plays next season is to sit in the middle of the side pulling the strings and nudging further forward when he can.
AM – Juan Mata
Mata is a superb player and someone who can nail down the number ten role next season.
LM – Angel Di Maria
Recent reports have suggested United could be ready to make a big bid for the Argentine winger although we won’t know more until after the World Cup.
ST – Robin van Persie
Van Persie is likely to get the nod ahead of Wayne Rooney in any choice between the two because of his relationship with the manager.
