Many before the tournament were hoping Argentina and Brazil will play each other in the World Cup final. Brazil lost their semi-final, but Argentina did their bit in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup final.
There were very few chances created throughout the 120 minutes, with the best chance falling to Arjen Robben moments before the final whistle, but his shot was blocked by Javier Mascherano brilliantly.
Argentina created little, but they scored all four of their penalties compared to Netherlands' two to qualify for their fourth World Cup final.
Here are the player ratings for Argentina:
Sergio Romero - 7
Didn't have to do much in the match, but saved two out of the four penalties faced to send his country into the final.
Pablo Zabaleta - 7
Good defending at right back throughout the match. Very consistent as he has been throughout the tournament, but didn't attack as much as he didn't get many opportunities to do so.
Martin Demichelis - 8
Coped with Robin Van Persie well throughout the match when the Man Utd striker was on the pitch, as well as Robben when the winger played down his side. At no point did his lack of pace look exposed, Argentina's defence look far stronger when he is playing.
Ezequiel Garay - 7
Had a half chance in the first half when a header from a corner went over the bar, scored his penalty in the shoot-out emphatically.
Marcos Rojo - 7
Defended to a high ability, kept Robben quiet when he was looking to cut in on his favoured left foot. Little quality in the final third when he could get forward.
Javier Mascherano - 9
Was knocked out in the second half after a tackle, but his performance throughout was outstanding. Made a superb block from Robben in the last minute of the 90. Numerous other blocks and organised the midfield well, top performance.
Lucas Biglia - 7
Looked comfortable in the midfield, making plenty of through balls down the side of Netherlands' three man defence.
Enzo Perez - 7
Energetic, was helping Mascherano in closing down opposition. Injured in a lunging tackle to stop Janmaat attacking.
Ezequiel Lavezzi - 7
Good energy down the right of the match, worked hard for his team both going forward and defensively.
Gonzalo Higuain - 7
Ran in behind well for his country looking to create space. Looked dangerous, thought he scored when a close range shot hit the side netting.
Lionel Messi - 7
Struggled to be allowed space in the Dutch back 4, forced deeper and deeper to do that. Scored his penalty though, but will need to make a greater impact if he is to finally win the World Cup.
Sergio Aguero - 7
Come on for Higuain after 81 minutes, little impact overall. Looked like he was lacking match sharpness.
Rodrigo Palacio - 7
Come on for Perez after 81 minutes, great cross in extra-time that just evaded past the on-rushing Aguero, missed a good chance late on though with a header.
Maxi Rodriguez - 7
Come on for Lavezzi after 101 minutes, little impact but was emphatic to score the winning penalty.
