Stats: The rise of Clint Dempsey since leaving Spurs but why?

Clint Dempsey has resurrected his career since leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Seattle Sounders last summer but why couldn't he perform at Spurs?

The USA captain scored the opening goal in his sides 2-1 win against Ghana in their World Cup opener last night and now has ten goals in 13 appearances for club and country since March.

Dempsey joined Spurs from Fulham on deadline day in August 2012 but never managed to reach his potential during his only season with the North London club.

He did find the net 12 times in 43 appearances in all competitions under Andre Villas-Boas but was not putting in the same displays that he is in America now.

His best moments for Spurs were in the Premier League games against Manchester United as he netted the winner in a 3-2 win at Old Trafford before rescuing a point for the Lilywhites against the Red Devils in stoppage time at White Hart Lane.

He returned seven goals and four assists in 29 Premier League appearances, a solid return but Dempsey is capable of so much more and has proved this with Seattle in Major League Soccer this season.

After moving to the Sounders midway through the MLS season in 2013, the former Fulham man struggled to find his best form as he was not fully match fit.

However, the 31-year-old has been exceptional in their 2014 campaign and is the leader of the US Men's National Team at the World Cup.

'Deuce' is now performing at his best and is creating 1.78 chances per game at the Sounders, an astonishing improvement from his 0.21 chances created per appearance at Tottenham.

He is also getting more shots off per game and is more successful with his take ons too.

Some will argue that the Premier League is a better league than MLS, and although this is true in terms of quality, the reason Dempsey is thriving is simply down to his role in the side.

He is the leader and is allowed to roam around in attack, and this is where he is at his most dangerous.

Jurgen Klinsmann gives him the same role with the USA and he is a defender's nightmare as a result of the free role.

Dempsey wasn't able to express himself enough at Tottenham and was never at his absolute best because of the restrictions placed upon him.

AVB should have put his trust into the forward and he would have undoubtedly been a huge success in North London with the right treatment.

Dempsey will look to build on the USA's win last night against Portugal on Sunday night as the American's look to get out of the "Group of Death" in Brazil.
