Ex-Gunner tips Mario Mandzukic for Arsenal move

Alan Smith has been talking about the possibility of Bayern Munich's Mario Mandzukic joining Arsenal this summer.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith believes Mario Mandzukic would be a good signing for Arsene Wenger’s side.

The Croatian international’s time at Bayern Munich is rumoured to be coming to an end, with Robert Lewandowski heading to the Allianz Arena this summer. But such a prolific front-man is unlikely to be lacking in potential suitors.

Mandzukic scored 26 goals for Bayern last season, and he set up a further 10. At 28, he is also experienced enough to step straight into a side like Arsenal but young enough to have an impact for years to come.

In an interview with Talk Sport, Smith said, “Wenger will be bringing in a striker this summer, hopefully a very good one. There are a few out there at the moment. Just look at the likes of Mandzukic.”

Smith was talking about the reports linking Mario Balotelli with a switch to the Emirates. But the ex-Gunner believes the Bayern star is a far better option than the Italian international.

With new arrivals almost certain to supplement Olivier Giroud, a loan move for Villa could see those players bed in just as the Spaniard will have to. But it will also give Arsene Wenger more options from the bench, and ensure his side get off to the best start in a campaign that is likely to see a considerably strengthened Chelsea and Manchester United.

With no issues of Villa playing for Arsenal in the Champions League, his experience could also prove vital in the group stage.

In truth it would be a win-win, with Villa and one permanent front-man such as Karim Benzema or Jackson Martinez giving Wenger one of the most formidable front-lines in Europe…while also allowing Theo Walcott to fully recover from his injury and Yaya Sanogo to gain further experience.

Villa has scored 213 goals in a career that has seen him play for Atletico, Valencia, Barcelona and Real Zaragoza. So what chance a brief stint in North London before he hits the Big Apple?
