Alessandro Del Piero has opted not to renew his contract at Sydney FC but a move to D.C. United is unlikely according to owner Erik Thohir.

At the age of 39, Alessandro Del Piero appears to be searching for one last playing challenge after choosing to leave Sydney FC.

Del Piero is one of the greatest players in Juventus history having played 513 games for the Old Lady, scoring 208 goals and winning multiple Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.

The Azzurri ace left Juventus in 2012 for Sydney FC where he managed a goal every other game for two years and became a hugely popular figure with Australia’s football fans.

A huge number of destinations were suggested for Del Piero when he left Turin in 2012, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers before he chose Sydney and even at 39 he is likely to get a lot of offers.

But one possible suitor in Major League Soccer club D.C. United look unlikely to join the race after club owner Erik Thohir, who also owns Serie A side Inter, poured cold water on speculation.

“He’s a great player, but I don’t know anything about an approach for Del Piero,” he told reporters at Inter’s General Assembly.

“For now I think that D.C. United’s squad is set and their market runs at different times. We also shouldn’t forget that there is a salary cap.

“In the coming months we will see about the transfer market but I don’t have any information for you at the moment.”
