The news comes from industry insider Ahsan Rasheed who tweeted this week a list of PS4 developments to look out for. Top of the list was, ‘1. Local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p rendering for select titles.’ adding later that, ‘Number 1 I've known for a good minute, but software is still buggy and not every game works. Please be excited.’
For gamers yearning for backwards compatibility this news will serve to stir some interest. There’s plenty of titles from previous PlayStation generations we can think of that we’d like to see get a HD makeover.
PC emulators of older PlayStation incarnations already support HD upgrades and with PS4 looking more like a specked-out gaming PC, rendering out old titles in 1080p is well within it’s capabilities.
Whilst the rumours are yet to be officially confirmed by Sony this is a prospect getting us excited. Does this also come as good news to you? If so what cherished games from the archives would you most like to see on your PS4?
