All the signs and rumours are pointing towards a very interesting summer in Ligue 1. It looks like the league could be ready for a goalkeeper transfer merry-go-round with Marseille stopper Steve Mandanda kicking off the whole cycle if he decides to leave OM. Reportedly wanted by Monaco, the 28-year-old would be perfect for a lot of top clubs, no more so than Champions League-bound Arsenal.
The current Marseille number one has been continually linked with a move away from the Stade Velodrome this summer, and if Monaco are not able to prise Hugo Lloris away from Tottenham Hotspur, then Mandanda is apparently next on their wanted list. Marseille staff are well aware of this, and would reportedly like Mexican superstar Guillermo Ochoa to be Mandanda's replacement.
When he moved to Ligue 1 two years ago, the decision for the highly-rated Ochoa to move to one of France's smallest top-tier sides was met with surprise and confusion. He had previously been linked with Liverpool, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but ended up at the Corsican side.
After his two impressive seasons in Ajaccio, the Mexican goalkeeper has been linked with a move away from France, but his recent comments have made it clear he wants to stay in Ligue 1, and with Ajaccio set to drop down to Ligue 2 this season, it makes the move to Marseille a definite possibility.
"I love this league, I would like to continue here, now I know it well." he told French TV station beIN Sport this weekend.
Any move for Ochoa would of course begin with the departure of Mandanda, and his performances this season have been questioned by some Marseille fans. Even if there is no move to Monaco, there will be plenty of teams looking for an international quality goalkeeper. He was often linked to United and other English clubs in the past.
