Montpellier actively seeking replacement for Newcastle United target

With the departure of Remy Cabella set for this summer, Montpellier are seeking replacements for the Newcastle United target.

After managing to hold on to him through the January transfer window, French side Montpellier are actively seeking a replacement for Newcastle United target, Remy Cabella.

Reports in the French press have linked the 2012 Ligue 1 Champions with AS Nancy attacker, Jeff Louis, paving the way for Cabella to say his goodbyes this summer.

Louis has been in terrific form of late, scoring nine goals in 20 games for the Ligue 2 side. Six of them coming in his last four matches, the 21-year-old from Haiti started the run with a hat-trick against Le Havre and continued to find the back of the net against Tours and Creteil. He only joined Nancy two years ago, but his contract is up next summer now would be the perfect time to cash in, and perfect for Montpellier to do a cheap deal, replacing Cabella in the process.

There is little doubt that the 23-year-old Corsican will be leaving the Stade de la Mosson this summer, and less surprising that there will be more than one side interested in the talented playmaker.

Newcastle made their interest known this winter, trying to strike an immediate deal with Montpellier, but with the French side in a relegation battle, they couldn't afford to that their top scorer depart until they were safe.

The signing of Cabella was touted as a replacement for the outgoing Yohan Cabaye, but the only similarity between the two players is their nationality. If rumours are to be believed, Cabella would be a replacement, and upgrade on the possibly departing Hatem Ben Arfa.

It has been a difficult season for the former Lyon and Marseille midfielder, and behind all the hype, his performances just haven't lived up to the early promise. This has been his least productive season to date with only three assists and two goals in the league; it looks like all parties will look to pastures new this summer.

If Alan Pardew decides to bring in another flair player, then Cabella would be ideal. Like Ben Arfa he started as a winger, but has developed into a very dangerous number 10, but unlike the 26-year-old, he has goals in his game too. He scored his 10th of the season on Saturday against Ajaccio, add in five assists for what has been a very poor Montpellier side and the potential of how good Cabella is frightening.

Newcastle's only problem will be to convince the Montpellier player that St James' Park is the best place for him. Without European football, you only have the draw of the Premier League to call upon.

With every goal that Cabella scores, or makes, the price and interest grows. This is why the Magpies tried so hard to bring him in this winter.
