Double good news for Manchester United as £37m deal hurts fierce rivals

The signing of Juan Mata by Manchester United is also bad news for Liverpool.

Juan Mata looks set to become a Manchester United player in the next 24 hours as he flew in to the city, transfer window style, in a helicopter today for a medical ahead of a move being announced tomorrow morning.

It is a much needed boost for United - as their season continues to be a disappointment under new boss David Moyes.

It was always predicted that the transition period from Sir Alex Ferguson to the new boss would be difficult - but nobody quite thought it would be this tough.

However, nobody would have thought the players would also respond so badly to the changing of the guard.

But this signing is a signal of intent - and personally I feel is on par with the signature of Mesut Ozil for Arsenal in the summer.

Mata has won the Chelsea player of the year on two consecutive occasions - so it is no surprise that United have moved quickly to sign him considering their current creative difficulties in midfield.

But the deal comes with two prongs of goodness for Manchester United fans - as it seems to have prevented fierce rivals Liverpool from getting their hands on their main winter target.

Mohamed Salah is all set to sign for Chelsea in an £11 million deal this week after The Blues agreed a fee with FC Basel for a player who has so often been their scourge in European competitions.

With the recent departure of De Bruyne on top of Mata’s expected departure the once full-to-the-brim attacking midfielder options at Chelsea now seem to have diminished sharply - and Salah will help alleviate those issues once he agrees personal terms and is given a Work Permit to play in the UK.

Salah would have been a star in the Liverpool team - in Chelsea’s he is likely to disappear into the woodwork much of the time.

So United have snapped up a quality Spanish international from a league rival (next season at least) while also preventing their fierce historic rivals from bringing in a highly talented player.

Not bad for a couple of days work.
