On this day: New deal for Cole and Arsenal 'Invincible' standard says Vieira

On the 19th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 19th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 19th January 2013…

Five star Liverpool

Liverpool dealt out a thrashing against Norwich City - again. The Canaries were put to the sword against The Reds as they conceded five at Anfield in a 5-0 defeat.

Jordan Henderson got the ball rolling, before Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and an own goal from Ryan Bennett confirmed Norwich’s misery.

A year later and Bennett was the hero for Norwich yesterday as he scored the winning goal against Hull City at Carrow Road.

Stayed in Chelsea

Ashley Cole was first reported to be on the verge of a new deal at Chelsea. The left-back had just six months remaining on his current deal at Stamford Bridge and it looked as though he was on his way out of the club.

However he had been in good form - and was indeed rewarded with a deal just three days later.

But fast forward a year and there does not seem to be a year-long extension in the offing on this occasion - as he has lost his place in the Chelsea team.

He is said to be on his way to the United States.

Patrick Vieira was singing the praises of his former team and coach Arsenal and Arsene Wenger. He believed the current crop of players at The Emirates had the ability to be as good as his ‘Invincibles’ side of 2003-04:

“I believe Arsenal, on a good day when they have all their players fit and in form, can beat anyone. OK, right now they lack the consistency to win the Premier League title. But they have good players, very good players. And if you look at Arsenal in the last few years then I think they have played even better football than we did in 2003-04. For me they are definitely better to watch as a team but we were stronger, had physical presence and more experience.”

A year on and they top the table.
