Match to be played on 5th January at 15:00. Venue: Anfield, Liverpool.
Liverpool will have a brief rest from their pursuit of a top four place in the Premier League when they take on Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup this weekend.
Liverpool are in very good form and playing some superb football, which is encouraging as Brendan Rodgers is missing several key first team players at the moment.
However, he should still be confident of name a strong side for the game and this is the team he may go with.
GK – Brad Jones
Jones has been an able deputy at the club for several seasons and he should relish the chance to put a little bit of pressure on Simon Mignolet. Jones is a competent all round ‘keeper and shouldn’t let the team down.
RB – Glen Johnson
Johnson is one of the best right-backs in England. If he starts the game then defensively he should be able to cope with anything Oldham throw at him and he should get forward well to support the attack.
CB – Martin Kelly
A possible change could see Martin Kelly coming in on the right hand side of central defence. He’s been around the fringes of the first team squad after injury and should be fresh and raring to go.
CB – Daniel Agger
Agger will most likely stay in the back four so the defence retains some shape and leadership. Agger is a very solid defender and will be effective if Oldham try and make the match a physical one.
LB – Aly Cissokho
Cissokho was brought in from Valencia as cover for the defence and he should start again on the left hand side. He’ll have plenty of the ball in this game so he needs to stay calm and composed in Oldham’s final third.
RM – Raheem Sterling
Sterling should definitely play because he offers the midfield that injection of pace. He can play down either side of the team and should be effective in terms of putting Oldham on the back foot and creating space.
DM – Lucas
Lucas is a very fit and professional player so he shouldn’t need a rest. He’s done a great job mopping up in front of the back four and feeding the more creative players so far this season.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Gerrard had half an hour in the win against Hull and if he’s sharp, he’ll play. Gerrard will be fresh after an injury lay off and he’ll be a very important player if the start of this game doesn’t go according to plan.
AM – Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho is world class in that space just behind the main striker. He links up with the rest of Liverpool’s attacking players well and he can also rotate with the player Rodgers starts out on the left.
LM – Luis Alberto
That player could be summer signing Luis Alberto who may enjoy a rare start. If he gets that luxury then he needs to get stuck in and make the most of the opportunity to put pressure on other squad members.
ST – Iago Aspas
It’s time for Iago Aspas to show Liverpool fans why the club were right to spend just under £8 million on him. Rodgers will be looking for a performance as he mulls over possible attacking January reinforcements.
