Arsenal defender urges Wenger to "make the right additions"

With the January transfer window upon us, Per Mertesacker has stressed that the Gunners need the correct new faces.

Arsenal have the chance to end the year in top spot in the Premier League, with the north London side seemingly set to put in a title challenge for the first time in a number of years.

However, there is a case to suggest that the Gunners will look to add one or two new faces in the January transfer market.

Per Mertesacker has lauded the impact that Mesut Ozil has made since joining the Emirates Stadium and has stated that Arsene Wenger must be strategic in his targeting of new players.

"We need the right additions. We said that a lot in the summer then Mesut Ozil came,” the Germany international told the club’s official website.

"But at this time, in a very special period that only happens in England, you need to get the right additions with players who come back from injury.

"We lost Aaron Ramsey [against West Ham] so a good player is maybe out for two or three weeks so we need the right additions now. We have a good squad and that's going to be vital in the next couple of weeks."

There has been rumours that Wenger will look to add a new striker to his squad in January to take some of the goalscoring burden away from Olivier Giroud.
