Mancini: Game shouldn't have been played

Roberto Mancini's Galatasaray stunned Juventus to secure Champions League progress but he admits the game shouldn't have gone ahead.

A dramatic late Wesley Sneijder winner sunk Juventus in snowy conditions in Turkey and while Galatasaray boss Roberto Mancini thinks victory was deserved, he admits the game shouldn't have been played.

Mancini pulled off a shock triumph over compatriot Antonio Conte and progresses to the knockout stages, leaving Juventus to face a crisis.

The conditions made the game tough and after the final whistle Juventus officials complained that it should never have gone ahead.

"I thought it shouldn't be played today," Mancini told Premium Calcio. "It was dangerous for the players.

"The officials wanted to play and it was important for them to get the game finished."

Juventus had come into the fixture needing just to avoid defeat to secure second place with Real Madrid a long way clear in top spot.

Sporting director Beppe Marotta's thoughts will now turn to protecting the assets already at Juve's disposal, most pertinently Paul Pogba.

Pogba has always stressed how happy he is at Juventus, but he couldn't have imagined he would be playing Europa League football.

The vultures will now circle the Juventus Stadium and the pendulum seems to be swinging the other way - how costly could Sneijder's goal prove in the long term?
