Liverpool latest: Rodgers on winger's importance and update on two Barca targets

Manager Brendan Rodgers has said that young winger Raheem Sterling could have an important role this season following his recent spell of three starts from three games.

Rodgers’ told the Liverpool website: ‘He’s a terrific young player to have. He will always be important for us this season; he didn’t play so much in the opening months, but you can see that he’s a real threat when he’s at the top of his game.’

Steven Gerrard could be ruled out for up to six weeks following a hamstring injury sustained in the 4-1 against West Ham on Saturday.

The club are awaiting the results of a scan the Liverpool captain will have had today as the Reds enter a busy period of the season.

Liverpool face even more competition for Barcelona full-back Martin Montoya according to TalkSport.

The report says that sources in Italy claim Napoli have entered the race for the 22-year-old, and that his agent is set to meet with officials from Napoli, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

One Barcelona player the Reds look certain to miss out according to TalkSport is Marc Bartra. Liverpool, along with other Premier League clubs have reportedly been watching the winger but has said he is close to signing a new contract at the Nou Camp.

He’s quoted, saying: ‘The club has given me everything. I hope to be here for many years and to succeed.’

Liverpool’s under-21 side lost 3-2 to Bolton Wanderers at the Kirkby Academy this afternoon. Goals from Jordan Rossiter and a Jordon Ibe penalty wasn’t enough for the young Reds to avoid defeat.
