Ex shamed Chelsea striker failing in France, will be sold in January

Adrian Mutu is yet to register a single goal for Ajaccio this season and could return to Romania.

One time Chelsea forward Adrian Mutu, who had his contract terminated on account of a breach due to failing a drugs test in 2004, is struggling to recapture his peak form for current side Ajaccio as he is yet to score a goal despite nine Ligue 1 appearances to date.

After a solitary season with Cesana, following five years with Fiorentina, Mutu switched to Ajaccio in 2012 and returned 11 goals from 26 appearances in his debut campaign.

However, the club's upper brass are dissatisfied with his performances this season, according to L'Equip, who speculate that a mid-season transfer back to his native Romania could be forthcoming for the misfiring forward.

The report states that Mutu is under contract until 2015 but, regardless, he 'will leave the club in January'. It added that the likely destination for him next will be 'Petrolul [currently third in its Championship].'

Because of the barren nature of the club's front-line, Chelsea have also been linked with making a move for some of the world's hottest attacking talent, particularly a member of another former Mourinho side; Jackson Martinez of FC Porto, whose representation was supposedly in England in an attempt to ratify an imminent switch.

'It's not true that [Martinez's agent] was in London to meet me a few days ago. In the January market we won't buy a striker,' he concluded.
