Arsenal 2-0 Southampton - Boruc and penalty gifts give Giroud a double

A double from Olivier Giroud has put Arsenal four points clear of the chasing pack.

Arsenal have gone four points clear at the top of the table after beating Southampton 2-0 at The Emirates Stadium.

It was not a result that truly reflected the game - as both teams were equally matched. However Arsenal owed their victory to the Southampton goalkeeper and Wojciech Szczesny’s international rival for Poland Artur Boruc.

The Saints keeper has had a few iffy moments recently, something he has been prone to throughout his career, but this must rank as one of the worst.

He decided he would try his best to take on dogged French international striker Olivier Giroud - who went on to embarrass the stopper by whipping the ball away and tucking it into the back of a gaping net.

Then, with four minutes left, Arsenal doubled their lead.

A corner saw Jose Fonte grab a chunk of Per Mertesacker’s shirt in one of those penalties everyone wants to see awarded - until it actually happens, although the reality is it was by the letter of the law a penalty.

Were it not for that moment of madness from Boruc and a perhaps soft penalty award against Jose Fonte this game would have finished a worthy 0-0 - but as it is Arsenal are now clear at the top of table with Liverpool drawing 3-3 with Everton earlier and Chelsea yet to play.
