West Ham Net Spend - The league's biggest under-performer?

West Ham committed the majority of their transfer budget on two Liverpool stars.

It has been a mixed season for West Ham so far, with the club sensational in a 3-0 defeat of Totenham, but indifferent for the remainder.

They presently sit 16th in the Premier League, level on points with Fulham who sit 18th, in the relegation zone.

A look at this summer's Premier League Net Spend table, looks rather different for the Hammers, where their combined transfer incomings and outgoings place them seventh.

Summer 2013 Net Spend

No team suffer a bigger negative differential in terms if Net Spend position versus Premier League placing, than the Hammers (11 places).

It is also easy to pinpoint exactly the reason for such a difference, Andy Carroll.

West Ham spent £15 million on Carroll, who is yet to play a minute for them in 2013/14, suffering with injuries and may not even be back until the New Year.

In terms of transfer funds, when it came to a striker Sam Allardyce put all his eggs in one basket and has since had to scratch around for free agents, Mladen Petric and Carlton Cole brought in to little effect so far.

Stewart Downing too has a total of zero goals and zero assists in his nine Premier League appearances to date. At the prices which were paid, Liverpool will be very thankful for West Ham's generosity so far.
