Boss hails Defoe's Tottenham record, Martinez hits back at AVB

A round up of key news stories about Tottenham Hotspur this morning.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas says Jermain Defoe’s European goalscoring record can inspire the club.

Defoe scored his 23rd European goal for Spurs last night, breaking the previous record of 22 held by Martin Chivers.

“We are all particularly happy for him. It is a great honour and will stay in time like Martin's and will be very difficult to break,” said AVB.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has hit back at AVB over comments the Portuguese made about Romelu Lukaku.

AVB implied that Lukaku could have pulled out of the challenge, which left Hugo Lloris unconscious last weekend.

“Romelu did nothing wrong. He did not do anything on purpose. If it's an incident where somebody should apologise, then maybe it's Soldado where he reacts by elbowing Phil (Jagielka) in his chest,” said Martinez.

Tottenham Hotspur will go after left-back Fabio Coentrao according to latest reports.

The Real Madrid star was thought to be a transfer target for Spurs over the summer, but the Spanish club held him back as cover in his position.

His wages of £100,000 per week were thought to be one of the stumbling blocks to a deal going through last summer.
