Since he arrived at the Emirates, Mesut Ozil has dazzled Arsenal fans with his technical ability and world-class talent. In short he has become one of two previously missing links (along with Mathieu Flamini), turning the Gunners from also-rans to impressive league leaders.
One of Arsenal’s biggest celebrity fans – Piers Morgan – has not been lacking in his praise for the mercurial German. But the talk show host was left conflicted after a tweet from Ozil in the build-up to yesterday’s match against Liverpool.
The tweet was a picture of Ozil and his Arsenal teammates ready for battle – quite literally – armed with an array of weapons. Of course it was meant as harmless fun, no doubt an indication that Arsene Wenger’s men are a collective ready to fight for each other and both win and lose as a team.
But given that Morgan had only that morning reiterated his desire for a change in America’s gun laws following the LAX shootings, the tweet was nothing if not ill-timed.
In the end, Morgan was simply happy to celebrate another three points for his side. But as a staunch anti-gun campaigner, he is all too aware that the games played on the pitch are very different to the sometimes terrible reality that takes place off it.
Below are Morgan's tweets, along with the story relating to Ozil's if you are yet to see it:
To say I am slightly conflicted by @MesutOzil1088 's Twitter feed this morning is the understatement of the century.— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) November 2, 2013
Until the right to life supercedes the right to bear assault rifles, the slaughter will continue. It defies any logic or humanity.— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) November 1, 2013
Why does any American citizen NEED an assault rifle? I still haven't heard a sensible answer other than 'it's my right'.— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) November 1, 2013
