Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Sturridge performance v Arsenal

It certainly was not the Liverpool striker's best day at the office yesterday evening at The Emirates.

If you peruse Twitter today, the words ‘Koscielny pocket’ come up as an automatic search - such ids their popularity among the same Tweet across the globe last night and this morning.

By and large, that relates to the fact Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were largely anonymous for vast parts of the game - the latter in particular.

On Soccer Saturday yesterday they were previewing this game and Paul Merson said something that turned out to be true a few hours later - Daniel Sturridge could have an off-day.

Low and behold, here it was.

He went into the game with 14 goals in his last 14 - and with a chance of beating Sam English’s 80 year record for scoring in consecutive away league games, this could have been a big evening for the mercurial talent.

But he just seemed absent. This was, in a large part down to the excellence of Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta - but also down to his own frugality in the dispensing of his talent.

I watched the game with my old man, and at one point he turned and said to me ‘Is Sturridge playing?’ genuinely wondering if he was on the pitch such was his ineffectuality.

He did have one moment of magic, flooring Koscielny with a wonderful piece of trickery in the first-half, but after that things went sour.

The moment that summed up his evening, an attempt at a right footed cross-field pass that sailed woefully, and hopelessly, out of play for an Arsenal throw-in - Sturridge looked disgusted with himself.

Of course, this was one bad performance. We should not forget the absolutely incredible form he has been in since arriving in Merseyside back in January, and that unfortunately, sometimes games just get away from you.

Merson could be right, Sturridge might be one of those players that one game in ten he just doesn’t show up, and that is fine. Just, Liverpool fans would hope it isn’t in the big games against the likes of Arsenal - because that is when they need him at their effervescent best:
